Hi from Martin at Terry Harrison Art.
Trying something new
I was busy this week thinking of what to talk about in this newsletter when a thought struck me that I think may resonate with fellow creatives.
I’ve been branching out in my photography recently, trying to diversify while I discover my niche - that genre of photography that just clicks with me.
I started out with landscapes and still have a great love for getting out there and capturing our stunning countryside here in the North East and up into Scotland. I have a long bucket list of scenes I want to visit and many trips half planned in my head.
But other commitments keep me near to home and I still want to be out shooting images, so I have started trying some new and not necessarily comfortable types of photography. The aim is to challenge myself and maybe learn something new.
My focus has been on what’s known as street or urban photography which is all about capturing the essence of a location and its people.
This has been a LOT harder than I thought and I have had a number of frankly frustrating trips as I try and get to grips with something completely new.
But each time I review my pictures I find a couple of images I really like and also learn a lot about what’s working and what is not.
It gives me more to focus on next time I go out and that’s part of the joy of what I do.
I think this is something that relates to all forms of art, the act of trying something new, breaking with tradition or habit and taking a risk.
We have a new range of online film courses that Fiona Peart has produced which showcase a very different application of watercolour compared to Terrys works.
Fiona’s style is loose and free, full of vibrant colours and showcasing a real freeness of application.
If you fancy a change, trying something new, then please do consider trying one of Fiona’s online courses here.
They are on offer at the moment and provide hours of tuition without the need for an ongoing subscription, once bought you have it for life.
Here are a few of my street images, including some people shots which I find very hard to take!
Happy painting all
Martin

I find I have a real affinity at the moment for a silhouette

Socks!

I love these 2 people shots - they provoke different questions for each one. What is she waiting for? What does he want?
